After crossing the Weddell Sea the sonar final starts showing the increase in the submarine slope as we reach the Antarctic continent itself.

The Weddell Abyss origin is related to the separation of Gondwana, the southern part of the super-continent Pangea, some 200 million years ago. Life and nutrition are abundant near coastal areas, but not over the Weddell Abyss, more sterile in nature.

Finally one sees over the horizon this white wall of ice, some 20 meters high – some 200 meters being submerged. The ice wall drifts with time, and so will the scientific bases built on the ice-shelf.
