Brean: Brean Down

Brean Down is a dramatic headland that juts out into the Bristol channel just to the South of Weston Super Mare and is a remnant of the Mendip Hills which once stretched further West.

It is a lovely windswept location and the muddy beach below is interesting at low tide (there’s several large fissures in the side of the Down which can be explored). A winding staircase climbs from the small car park and café at the south side of the Down to the top for great views out over the channel (especially at sunset) and a circular walking trail leads aronnd the area and past a disused fort.

There’s usually a population of hardy goats clinging to the near-vertical cliffs that look like they might tumble off at any moment!
