Südgeorgien und die Südlichen Sandwichinseln: near Antarctica - a magic suspended rock

When on my way to Antarctica, going across the South Atlantic, I was just in front of South Georgia. It was the austral summer and I departed from South Africa, on board an icebreaker. After one week surrounded by water it was magic to see that “black rock” as if suspended above the ocean.
South Georgia looked harsh, with peaks covered of snow and gusts of wind blowing all over. Still how comfortable it was also just to see some sort of land. The human population was quite reduced, basically around 50 British troops and the harbor master and wife. South Georgia was involved in the Falklands War – and it was perhaps first sighted by the Portuguese expedition of Goncalo Coelho and Amerigo Vespucci around 1501.
