One day in Paris
Last summer we had some exchange students and decided to go to Paris with them for a day, which is quite easy when living in the western part of Germany because there are some coaches services, providing a Paris round trip for around 30 Euro.
I guess it’d be the best to write about the day now, so you all can get an idea what you can do in Paris…
In the morning I had to wake up too early since the bus departed at 8 am in the middle of nowhere. Since some of my neighbors, who also hosted exchange students didn't go to Paris and another guy decided to go with his student on his own I meet a friend’s exchange student around 7 am at our bus stop. Well since I mixed up the timetables for Friday and Saturday we had to tremble some minutes, but finally we arrived in time at this coach station. The bus driver told us some stuff about security and so on and at 8:20 we left for Paris.
After some minutes we crossed the German-Belgian border and before crossing the Belgian-French border we had a break in a rest stop in Thieu. Unfortunately they didn't sell any Orangina, which is my favorite French soft drink. Some hours and several traffic jams later we arrived in Paris.
It was nearly 2 pm when the bus driver dropped us off on Avenue Kleber, which is pretty close to the Arc de Triomphe. That was our first station and after one of my mates did his presentation the exchange girls got some time to take fotos of Champs-Élysées and the Défence area, since we - but not they - knew that we wouldn't go there. We took the Metro – we bought this carne with 10 tickets for around 5 Euros - to Montmartre passed the Moulin Rouge - yeah the girls had another break to take photos - and for sure the "Cafe des 2 Moulins", which is the café where the movie "Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" was shoot.
In Montmartre we had some spare time, so I used the time to buy a spanish magazine, which is compared to other European countries, rather cheap, had some Orangina and took the funiculaire to meet the others at Sacré-Coeur. It was pretty cool to sit on the stairs in front of it and listen to the guy who took the guitar. After a quick run through the church it was time for lunch. OK, I admit you could already call it dinner, since it was something around 5 pm. We went to a small Greek tavern-style restaurant in a side street close to Notre Dame (lunch was great and around 5 Euro including a soft drink).
On our way to Notre Dame I bought a scarf, later on we took some photos until meeting in front of a statue close to the church. "We went inside the Cathedral, and there was a mass about to start. Next station was the Hôtel de Ville, where we lost two of our guys. The exchange girls were still in their "we want to take a million photos" mood and so I had the chance to see an Asian TV guy with a German soccer World Cup accreditation, who stayed in front of this "We love les bleus banners".
We approached the cultural department, where we had another foto session and finally the Louvre – which has btw a gratis admission for students with history and architecture majors. Crossing the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel we entered the Tuileries gardens, where we sat some time at a fountain. Since it was already late and we wanted to do a boot tour on the Seine river (usually starting at 5 Euro), we had to hurry up. We crossed the Place de la Concorde, where they set up a grand-stand direction Champs-Élysées, because of the national day. We went through a parc to Petit Palais and Grand Palais, where we took some group photos and finally went to the Seine bank. It was planned to do a boot tour, but since there were some problems it didn't work.
Finally we went to the Eiffeltower. Since my ankle was aching I decided to sit below the tower with some other group members who were also tired, while the others climbed the tower (around 3 Euro). It was kinda late and I already worried that we might be late. As the group returned we took some group fotos, and hurried up to get to the Trocadero and run along the Avenue Kleber, where our bus left around midnight.
