Kipps Hostel: Kipps Hostel

There’s a lot to like about Kipps Hostel.

First of all, the location. While it’s not within the city walls, it’s only a short walk from the attractions in the town centre and from Canterbury East Station. Arriving from London on a Friday night, we managed to follow the directions that I’d printed from their website and make it to the hostel without getting lost.

Then there’s the staff, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and keen to let us know what was going on in the city. Tourist highlights and upcoming events were also promoted via a whiteboard and laminated information sheets on the walls.

Apparently Friday night is ‘free pasta night’ – which made me regret eating before we left London. We passed up on that, but we did take advantage of the breakfast on Sunday morning. For under £2 each, we were able to help ourselves to a spread which included cereal, toast, scones, croissants, biscuits, hot drinks and orange juice. And had we wanted to cook for ourselves, Kipp’s has a very large kitchen with several stove tops and fridges.

In the lounge area, there’s a big-screen TV and plenty of DVDs to watch with fellow hostellers. There’s also a coin-operated internet computer which you can use if you haven’t brought along your laptop to use the free wireless internet throughout the hostel.

We booked a double room for £35 a night, which contained a double bed bunk (with a single bed on the upper layer) and a sink. It also came with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, which were replenished on the second day of our stay. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable ever – almost like sleeping directly on springs in places – but it definitely wasn’t the worst bed I’ve experienced in a hostel.

Toilets and showers were clean, if limited in number. There only seemed to be one of each on our floor, and I’m not sure if this was also the case in the floors with dorms.

Over all though, I’d recommend Kipp’s Hostel to anybody who’s travelling on a budget, and would stay there again if we returned to Canterbury.
