New Smyrna Beach: Don't Become Shark Bait

For years New Smyrna Beach was touted as "the World's safest bathing beach". Well, no more. Now we've earned the dubious sobriquet of "Shark Bite Capital of the World". Last year (2007) there were 17 attacks reported in the waters off our beautiful beach! No one died from the bites, but it sure made a lot of people more cautious. A lot of tourists (bait) come here every year to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean and its environs. Some of them don't pay attention to their surroundings. There are lifeguards posted all along the beach and they warn people if sharks are spotted. Some people go into the water around dusk which is one of the major shark feeding times. Others wade out into the water when they see fish jumping (dumb move-the fish are fleeing from something). Common sense is needed - I personally don't swim or boogie board when it's getting dusk, if fish are jumping and definitely if I see a triangular fin cutting through the water. Surfers are pretty knowledgeable about shark activities and tend to pay attention to conditions.
