Thermae Bath Spa: Thermae Bath Spa

Bath is – perhaps unsurprisingly – known for its baths. There are the ancient ones that you can find at the Roman Baths Museum, a World Heritage Site and Britain’s only naturally occurring hot-spring. Those are fantastic, and if you’re interested in Roman (or British) history, I definitely recommend a visit.

However, on a cold afternoon in January, it was the more modern baths nearby that had greater appeal. Thermae Bath Spa is located in the centre of the city of Bath – if you’re lost, head towards Bath Abbey and follow the street signs.

Our entry tickets gave us full use of the pools, steam rooms and changing facilities. We also took up the offer to hire robes and towels, as we’d only packed our swimwear for our weekend vacation. We were given electronic wristbands, which opened our changing-room lockers, and which we could also use in the café. Any food charged to your wristband has to be paid for as you leave. It’s a great system. Until you loose your wristband. Which I did for about ten frantic minutes before locating it under a towel under a chair.

We found the Thermae Bath Spa to be smaller than the Spas we’d visited in Baden-Baden, Germany. Despite the multiple floors, there are only two public pools. One of those is on the roof, which I imagine would be lovely on a summer evening. On a winter afternoon, the water’s still warm, but getting into and out of the water means braving the cold.

So in the end, we only used about two and a half hours of our four hour ticket before deciding that we’d done enough spa-ing and it was time to head back to London. Gathering up our robes and our towels, we left Bath’s warm waters behind us, paid for our café purchases, and headed back out into the January cold.
