Kaunas: About Kaunas

In every country that I know there is some kind of mental battle between two big cities (like between the capital and the second biggest city for example). Lithuania is not the exception. Vilnius and Kaunas seem to be enemies to each other. People from Vilnius don't like Kaunas and its inhabitants and Kaunasers feel the same about Vilnius.
I don't really know what is so bad about Kaunas. It seems to be an old small city with quite nice people (although my friends from Vilnius say the opposite). It doesn't look though very different or special, it is more like an average European city. But if to get to know more about it, then the trip to Kaunas can be quite interesting. There is a 14th century fortification (Kaunas Castle), some nice churches, including one of the oldest in Lithuania - Vytautas' Church and Kaunas Cathedral Basilica - the largest Gothic building in Lithuania with great Baroque interior.
Kaunas has also some interesting museums, parks and gardens.
I would say that people may look kind of more reserved and self-concentrated then in Vilnius, but it becomes better once you get to know them.
