I’d eaten Sally Lunn buns before. Even as I was growing up, in New Zealand, on the other side of the world, they were a common sight in the local bakery. However, I hadn’t ever stopped to think about the name of the sweet bread roll, hadn’t ever considered the fact that Sally Lunn was a real person – at least, not till one weekend in January, on our trip to Bath.

Sally Lunn was a French refugee who arrived in the UK about 300 years ago. Her home – where she lived and baked her buns – is now the oldest house in Bath. There’s apparently a museum on the site now, where you can see the remnants of the original kitchen.

However, we weren’t there for the history so much as the dinner special we’d seen on the sandwich board outside. What made the food unique, is the way that the Sally Lunn bun was incorporated into the meal – garlic buns to start, and then for the mains, the bread being served under the meat, almost as if it were a second plate.

Listening into the conversations around us, it seemed that Sally Lunn’s was a popular dinner venue with locals as well as tourists.

Sally Lunn’s Refreshment House and Museum is located at 4 North Parade Passage, near the centre of Bath. The restaurant is also open for coffee and buns (and a selection of other food) during the day.
