Just before my trip to Iceland I decided I ought to get some off-road experience, because I wanted to drive across Iceland's rugged Interior. I looked for my nearest centre, and found one in nearby Strathmiglo - so I phoned up, booked a starter course for £99 and I was set. Because I was allowed to bring 3 friends, I phoned up two pals - one of whom brought along his 9 year old son.
We found the place without difficulty, although it is off the beaten track a little - as you'd expect! On arrival, we were greeted by a wiry man in his sixty-somethingth year, who took us through the safety blurb and got us to sign the usual waivers. Then we were off!
The track was some half a mile or so from the centre, and as we approached, my friend's son's eyes grew bigger and rounder. Hillocks, near vertical slopes, ponds, rough tracks, all hoved into view and with each one he squeaked:
"Are we going up THAT?"
We were indeed - but first of all our kind and patient instructor took me through the practicalities of diff.lock, changing gear, backing down hills safely, cadence braking, and not rolling my Land Rover over with all my friends inside!
It was so much fun. We went up slopes where all you could see through the windshield was sky. We went over tracks as pitted and rutted as a ploughed field. We rolled through ponds, water up to the door handles. We went down slopes, almost landing on our nose. And best of all - we all got a turn at the wheel.
At the end of it all, we got ourselves a nice certificate proclaiming our achievement - but nothing could better the grins on our faces. It's an experience well worth having, and I'll be back, for sure.
