This is a truly delightful traditional inn, which sits right on the waterfront in Elie - itself a traditional Fife coastal town. You can't get much cosier, with its open fire, chatty locals and free-flowing pints. For camaraderie, stay in the bar - but it can get crowded with people jostling for drinks. A better bet is to grab a downstairs table in the adjoining room. You still get the atmosphere, but you're seated away from the drinkers and can hold a private conversation without having to shout. Of course, it's all much quieter at lunch time - except during the high season, when it's always pretty busy.
To get away from it all, you can take a table upstairs with views over the bay, and in summer you can watch the Ship Inn cricketers play matches on the sand. You can also sit outside on the terrace - but bring a warm jumper!
The food is good pub grub, with some of the best fish and chips in the county, but don't expect anything fancy. It's very much based on good British favourites, such as: curry and rice; steak and ale pie; sirloin steak; hearty sandwiches - and all served with chunky chips or potatoes. All I can say is: it may be plain food, but it's good and hearty.
The Ship Inn really is a good slice of tradition, and as long as you're not after anything fancy-pants, this is almost guaranteed to satisfy. Grab yourself a pint, a corner table, and relax. All will be well.
