This is one of the best restaurants in Fife, if not Scotland. It's run by a husband and wife, and has a cosy, unpretentious feel that makes you feel comfortable and welcome. When we were there last, the atmosphere was relaxed, but we have been there when it's been more stilted. Because the dining room is small you can feel a little close to fellow diners, so you do rely a little on the attitude of those you're dining amongst. If they're comfortable and talkative, all is well. If they're stilted and awkward you can find yourself minding your Ps and Qs - but the trick is to drink enough of their excellent, incredibly reasonable wine, and then you can create your own atmosphere.
A word about their wine - their policy is to put a maximum of £10 on top of the retail price, which is a far cry from places that will treble the cost simply because they've got a man in a penguin suit pouring for you.
On arrival, you seat yourself in the front parlour and have a drink while perusing the menu, which is full of Scottish sourced gems such as: twice baked soufflé using Scottish cheese; Arbroath smokie-flavoured chowders; roast Scottish venison.
Bruce is the award-winning chef, but it's Jackie who takes care of you all evening, and she who is the face of the restaurant. She does an excellent job, and presents a calm, unruffled front without being overly friendly which would be a bit claustrophobic in such an intimate setting.
If I had a criticism, it's that we've found it quite hard to get a table - not just because it's a small restaurant, but because they seem so frequently to be closed! But it's certainly worth every minute of waiting, so if you find yourself in Elie, this is the restaurant at which to treat yourself.
