This cosy restaurant has been awarded 3 AA rosettes, and the price matches its reputation. For a 3 course meal with drinks before, after, and a bottle of wine, don't expect to part with less than £50 per person.
The Cellar's situation couldn't be more ideal for a romantic escape. Set back from the waterfront, it's all but hidden away in a traditionally narrow, fishing-village street. You walk through a stone archway, into a little courtyard and then into the restaurant.
You're immediately confronted by comfortable chairs and diners enjoying their pre-dinner drink before being shown to their tables. It's a slight shame, really, as the opening and closing of the door while you're awaiting seating can send cold Scottish air gusting over you, and if all the seats are taken you can find yourself being hovered over by standing customers. However, to be fair, the waitress was quick to free up chairs and the backlog lasted only a minute.
On a cold, rainy night, it was wonderful to be in such cosy surroundings - especially once we'd moved through from the waiting area. We were served efficiently and with a smile, and the food was very good - if not astounding. 3 AA rosettes promises more than was delivered, but there were certainly no complaints.
I had a starter of fish stew, which was a creamy and flavoursome soup with soft pieces of haddock and french onions, perfectly seasoned. For a main course I had halibut which was wonderfully flavoured, if just the tiniest bit overcooked (nothing to really frown about), with a pine nut crust. A friend ordered cod, which was divine, and another had duck which he truly adored - although I found it a little firm (I wouldn't go so far as to say tough, though!).
To accompany the meal, I asked advice from the waitress over which bottle of white to order, and was recommended a Sancerre which really delighted me. Floral, crisp and citrussy, it was really a fantastic accompaniment.
Pudding rounded off a delightful meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my frozen praline parfait, which melted on the tongue in caramelly nuggets of nutty goodness, while duck friend's sweet ginger pudding - much like a sticky toffee pudding, with ginger flavour - was beautifully light.
We had coffee and liqueurs at the table, before settling up and leaving, replete and happy.
