Ashburton: Ashburton

If you drive south of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand, you will find yourself passing through the town of Ashburton. Most people keep driving, on their way to some other place. But I had a friend that lives there, so I stopped for a look around.
Ashburton seems to be a place where they have taken all the old people in New Zealand. It's like an old peoples home, or a Returned Serviceman's gathering. Everywhere you go you find old people - the shops sell fashions from the 1950s, and the pubs are full of people who want to tell you about their life and yell "What's that? I can't hear you" a lot.
It is very much a service town with very little going for it. Its close proximity to Christchurch will always make it the kind of place people only ever stop for an ice cream on their way through.
However, there is a great little craft market on West Street, with all sorts of home made knick knacks, and their socks knitted from New Zealand wool last a lifetime!
