A trip to Dundee United's home ground is like something out of the annals of history - a run-down old ground, capacity 14,200 seats (and yet they managed a recent record crowd of 28,000 when Barcelona came to play), it breathes working-class footie with every cheer. Forget the chrome and glitter of the modern game - stadia like Tannadice remind you all too clearly of the grass roots of football, and should be revered. You can get tickets for under £20 on match day (depending on who you're playing) and the little ground allows a great view of the action as well as an intimate atmosphere. Naturally, this is a place to think twice about taking your kids, although there's usually a strong young following at the ground ends. It's really the sides where the hard core and foul mouthed supporters are gathered, so if you want your children to enjoy the game and don't want them listening to some pretty ripe language, take them to sit behind the goals.

The standard of football will seem poor if you're used to the premier European leagues, but it's certainly good enough to bring plenty of excitement, as well as being rough, tough and rugged. If you're a footie fan, you'll be right at home. If you're new to the game, take a deep breath and plunge in. After an initial shock, you'll find the water pleasantly warm.

If you think Tannadice is a run down old ground, despite having only 2 areas pre-dating the 1990s, 1 being covered and seated terracing and the other being a 1960s state of the art stand. I would hate to see what you think of the Neighbours at Dens and the majority of other scottish league football grounds.
