Discovery: Discovery, Dundee

The Discovery is Captain Scott's famous ship, which took him to the Antarctic and, first and foremost, it's rather beautiful - a last remnant of a bygone era of seafaring, with its triple masts and elegant lines. It bobs serenely in the harbour, an easy walk from the railway station and not far from the city centre. By car, it's close to the Tay Bridge - so easily accessible all round.
As an attraction, it's a pleasant hour or two to spend with or without children. The story of Scott and his expedition is real Boys' Own stuff, interesting enough without the visual aids and child-friendly contraptions. However, having children using the model cargo loader, getting their hands on the ship's wheel and running about the deck is a great way of expending some energy. It's all attention grabbing, and if your children - or you - are bored by it all, you're dull dogs indeed!
For a truly unique experience you can actually book the Discovery for private dining. I've never done it myself, but it does look good!

Adult tickets are £6.95, children £4.95, with under 5s going free.
