The trouble with hire cars is that they can sometimes be like a box of chocolates... sticky and horrible on the inside.
The car I had hired struggled to get up Mount Victoria, the big hill in the centre of Wellington, but at least the drive was interesting.
Many of the houses that are perched on the side of Mount Victoria have no car access. Instead, house owners park their cars on the side of the road and have personal cable cars to take them to their doors.
The summit of Mount Victoria is the perfect place to look out over New Zealand's capital city. There is a large carpark and a small walk up to the summit, which gives 360º views around the city (I once heard an American woman reach the top and exclaim "Wow, you get 365º views from up here". America really must be the greatest place on earth if you have an extra 5º than everybody else!).
From the summit you can still see the way the land was reclaimed after the 1855 earthquake, but perhaps the first thing you notice is the trees. Wellington is a green city, and trees are a major feature of the way the city looks.
The other thing you see is the hills, bunched up along the city's flanks like an unmade bed.
Now jump back in the car, it's all downhill from here.
