Some traditional and tasty snacks and cuisines I sampled when I toured the high drifts of Takayama City;

Hoba Miso:
Exceptionally delicious, this robust flavoured soybean paste satisfied my taste buds in the early hours of the morning. It’s a side dish served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A magnolia leave is laid over a tiny charcoal brazier or stove, and the toppings; miso, onions, shitake mushrooms are roasted and eat it while its hot! I think its Superb!

Hida Beef Sukiyaki:
I tried Sukiyaki for the first time (finally!) and it was excellent. Restaurants which serve Sukiyaki supply tables which are equipped with a stove in the centre. Then, arrives a huge bowl of fresh vegetables, tofu, udon and other Japanese specialties and thin slices of quality Hida beef (which is known to be one of the best in Japan). Hida beef on your menu will empty out your wallet but worth a try while you’re in Japan. See what the fuss is all about! I washed it down with a bottle of Sake.

Fruits:
I tried some apples purchased at the morning market. It’s fresh, juicy, crunchy, and fleshly good. Yummy sums it up.

Sembei (Japanese Rice Crackers):
Various merchant and stalls offer varieties of Japanese rice crackers in assorted flavours. There are loads to sample and watch out for the Sembei store in the Furuii -machi district (old private houses), there sits a man in front of an old style wooden oven baking sembei. I munched away some freshly baked rice crackers that the man handed to me. It was warm. If you desire to learn how to make rice crackers from scratch, enquire at the tourist info. I didn't have the time.
