The Bobby Car Championship has just started and promises to be one of the most exciting seasons ever. Bobby Car Racing? Never heard of it? Well it seems strange, but it’s true. Bobby Cars are little plastic buggies for children, which were mainly sold in the 70ies. Something like a Lomographic Actionsampler if it comes to the cars. And in Germany people seem to have a lot of energy and ideas. There is no other place where there are more inventions and more patent applications than Germany. And they also invent new sports like bobby car racing. They take the plastic cases of that toy-car and fill it up with concrete to make it heavier. They put real rubber tires below it and chase down mountains in a one to one competition. And it wouldn’t be Germany if they would do it just for fun. Bobby Car Racing is a serious matter! There are very high paces, up to 100 km/h and the protection gear is indispensable. It’s much about the adrenalin and the rush to your head that makes this sport so attractive. And also the stand alone factor of it, which makes you talk of the town. Pretty much comparable to the Lomographic Society, too. They have created Clubs, most of them in Germany and the Netherlands, and there is something like a union called the Bobbycarclub. There are Grand Prix like in the Formula One and hence the tiny town of Osnabrück developed as a Bobby Car-Mekka there are European and World championships. The funny thing about these international cups is, that there are only German and Dutch teams competing, but well, that’s not their fault that the other nations can’t drive the Bobbycar. The racers do all for the fame and to be up front in the ranking. And are very happy if media shows up. I have been doing two reports on the matter and I can call myself a Bobbycar-expert. The sport is being professionalized and attracts sponsors already. And the freshest novelty is that the first woman is breaking into the male dominated sport. So there is a bright future and maybe one day you will see live-coverage of Bobby-Car racing. And the drivers will earn millions and will be gazing from billboards and journals. I think there is a real possibility for that.
