Zavidovac: Hotel Kristall

I like to call hotels my home sometimes and I enjoy it very much. In Dubai I was in a room, which was cleaned three times a day and at night they used to put a bathrobe onto the bed. In Shanghai I slept in the oldest hotel of the city and with a Chinese spy in the dormitory, who asked a lot of suspicious questions and probably didn’t like the fact that I was a journalist. But the best hotel by far would be Hotel Kristal in Zavidovici, in Bosnia and Herzegowina. It used to be one of the best hotels in Yugoslavia and the exterior was definitely Tito-style. But the interior was unbelievable: best retro 70ies wallpaper, furniture and whatever. All in the best quality. Mint I would say. In Berlin you can sell this stuff for millions. I didn’t take any ;) I wanted to leave it in perfect state. Another great thing was the porters. This bold one on my shots was my definite favourite. I took him to the roof. Zavidovici lays in the heartland of Bosnia and was involved in the war in the 90ies, there are still many people traumatized and the shadow of the neighbour-fights still remains. But there is hope after all. Back in the days Hotel Kristal was used for refugees but now it shines again. How to reach: Hotel Kristal is the only hotel in Zavidovici. So if you ask for hotel you sure will be led there. Zavidovici is in North of Bosnia, so it would be best to take a bus or car from Sarajevo and drive up.
