Metro in Paris is not the cleanest and nicest place. It is definitely not regularly and properly cleaned. Not so many people notice that though...I guess as far as I come originally from Saint-Petersburg and used to take much nicer and cleaner metro (the same in Moscow) I tend to compare. Anyway this is a very fast and easy way to travel in Paris from one sight to another, especially on long distances. In order not to be confused with the system (my American friend was always taking wrong trains, because he was used to another system) you need to check the station you are going to and then the last one in you your direction on this line. This last station will be always written above the corridor that you need to choose in order to come to the right platform.
One regular ticket .- is one ride. If you leave the metro you cannot enter again with the same ticket even within an hour (unlike in some other cities). It is better to keep your ticket till the end of the ride because at a few tricky stations you will need it to get out. Once I lost the ticket and was able to get outside only together with some nice woman through the same machine. So be careful in general with the ticket, but you can also rely on some nice people.

This is a very old metro system and they really dont bother at all looking at tourists or travelers dragging their heavy luggages from one to the other platforms using those old and dirty stairs...I do agree that it is very convenient to get from one to other places around Paris by metro but I really hate arriving in Paris by Metro with all my luggages....
