Hordaland: Vøringfossen

This is Norway's most visited waterfall, and it's easy to see why. Situated not far from Highway 7, it's easy to access and truly spectacular. There are two falls, facing one another across a cliff face - one a gushing river, the other little more than a stream - but both stunning. The water falls for 145 metres before cascading into a churning plunge pool and being snatched away by the River Bjoreia, to wend its way through a steep-sided canyon.
Standing, gazing down into the plunge pool gave me an eerie feeling of weightlessness, while the sound of all that tumbling water was quite disorienting for my senses. It was a truly awesome sight, and I can well see why the falls are so popular.
A word of warning - we went in spring, when there were still stubborn patches of snow on the ground, and the short walk involved a little clambering over a rocky path. This could be slippery in places, so be sure to wear sensible shoes and take care with children.
