Utne Hotel: Utne Hotel, Utne

I loved this hotel, depsite the fact I went there in off-season, with a friend who was suffering terrible toothache and whose nerves were seriously on edge!
The hotel is an eighteenth century, wooden, white house built right on the fjordside. It's been a hotel for 300 years, and takes its tradition of hospitality very seriously - albeit with a friendly face. The rooms are maintained in a traditional style, decorated with period furniture, and you truly feel as if you're stepping back in time when you stay there.
Unfortunately, the eager young man who greeted us on our arrival thought it a great treat to tell us our room was haunted - which so freaked out my pain-wracked friend she burst into tears and wanted to switch. Once she'd calmed down we went for a restorative walk, drinking in the astonishing countryside of lochs - or rather, fjords - and mountains (made us feel right at home).
Back at the hotel, I had a sneaky word with the young man and got him to reassure my friend that the ghost story was all bunkum. Thus reassured, we kept our room - which was a pleasure to me. I was rather fond of its small but light and slightly quirky character.
Once again, the off-season put a kibosh on a decent restaurant experience - and, again, my friend rather felt the effects when the set menu they provided included two dishes she couldn't eat. However, they were more than gracious about rustling up something else, and in the end it was a good, tasty and rather unusual meal. I'm afraid I forget the starter, but the main course was - according to our young waiter friend - anglerfish!
This is a lovely hotel in which to stay, and for peace and quiet, beautiful views and a little piece of Norwegian history, you surely can't find anywhere better?
