Windsor Castle: Windsor Castle

My New Year’s resolutions: to see more of this country I find myself living in; to visit more historic places, more museums and galleries; to explore and discover and learn. With that in mind and with some time off work, we set out this afternoon to visit Windsor Castle.

According to the South West Trains website, it’s possible to get a train ticket plus entry deal for Windsor Castle. However, when we got to our local station, the queues for the ticket windows seemed way too long, so we settled for a ‘cheap day return’ to Windsor and Eton Riverside and paid for the entrance ticket separately once we got to the castle (£14.20 for an adult ticket).

Windsor Castle looks just as I imagine a castle should do. There are the outside walls with arrow slits, there’s a keep at the top of the hill, and the royal standard flies above it all if Queen Elizabeth is in residence. Unfortunately she wasn’t today, but the Union Jack blowing in the wind was still worth a couple of photos.

An audio guide was included in the admission price. This provided a good general overview of the state apartments, St George’s Chapel and the grounds of the castle. It also included comments from people who lived and worked in the castle: grounds keepers, curators and even HRH Prince Charles.

Highlights for me were Queen Mary’s incredibly detailed dolls house (though I needed to check a guide book in one of the stores to work out just which Queen Mary it belonged too), the paintings of Queen Elizabeth and King Edward as children and the total crimsoness of the Crimson Drawing Room.

St George’s Chapel was also amazing. In the quire, each member of the Order of the Garter has a specific seat, marked with a banner and a wall plaque. I was also surprised to find a number of royals were buried in the chapel, including King Henry VIII, his third wife, Jane Seymour and, more recently, the Queen Mother. According to the audio guide, there are services held in St George’s Chapel most days and members of the public are welcome to attend.

We found three gift shops inside the castle grounds, which sold books, ornaments, jewellery, linen, hand cream, pencils, teaspoons, bookmarks and all sorts of mementos – but unfortunately no magnets with the words ‘Windsor Castle’ on them. However, we were able to satisfy our need for a labelled fridge-dwelling souvenir in one of the shops on a nearby street. Similarly, there’s no café inside Windsor Castle, but in the surrounding area there are plenty of places to eat.

As we left, we got our maps stamped by one of the wardens. This gives us unlimited entry to Windsor Castle for a year (as long as we bring our map, original ticket and some form of identification when we return). I’m definitely keen to head back to the castle next time we have visitors, and the promise of free entry provides even more incentive to do so.
