Frankreich Frage: Teaching English

Veröffentlicht am 8:31 29.12.2007 von cpeac999

I'm interested in teaching English in Europe. Is there any demand for English teachers in France? Could you tell me how to apply for teaching positions?

Yes and no - there is some demand for English teachers, but most schools in France want teachers who have experience in the private sector. So I'd say you'd probably have to get a job in another field while fishing for private students. Experience like that will catch the attention of schools. A CELTA wouldn't hurt, either. But even so it's difficult to get full-time work, because there are already so many native English speakers living in western Europe.

Here are a couple of pages to get you started:
http://www.americansinfrance.net/MovingPlanner/Teaching-English-in-France.cfm
http://www.britishcouncil.org/france-education-teaching-in-france.htm

As far as applying, there are many many job boards online for ESL - just go to Google and type "esl job listings france" and see what you get.

Hope this helps.

I know there is a yearly French assistant program , where you can apply through your local French Embassy to teach English in France for a Year. The program has an age limit , I think of 30 years old.
Another route you could try is to apply to one of the language schools , if you are a trained teacher.
You could also post an ad on Craigslist , because sometimes there are persons who want English classes for their children in their homes and not necessarily at a school.

Hi :)
I think the best way to teach english anywhere in Europe is to have a TEFL certificate first. I'm not sure about France but I know Germany has a huge need for English teachers with this qualification!

Another option, and the way that I got the opportunity to teach English in France, was that I have a degree in French. If you have that too, you can apply through a US university that has an exchange with a French university. The government technically requires you to have a Master's degree, but if you go through this route of a cooperation between a US university and the French one where you will teach, the Master's degree requirement is waived.

I had a fantastic year teaching English in Tours, in the Loire Valley. It was a beautiful spot and an excellent experience teaching. The money's not bad either!

Bonne chance!

Hi there,

You dont have to go far for answers. We have a fellow Cosmotourist here called AliJo. In fact, I read her profile just a few minutes ago. According to her profile, she and her husband have been to Europe, incluidng France, to train as English teachers and to teach. They have also been to Japan for the same purpose. I think there is mention somewhere that she is from the States. Now, they are in Scotland. Contact her for first-hand tips!

Hi!
First of all, are you only asking about the job application or are you also concerned about the visa requirements?
I live in Germany, but it's the same system as in France. English teachers are very required. My boyfriend, who is an English teacher, but doesn't have English as a mother tongue, got a job at Berlitz, very easily. These jobs are also well paid. You should search for private language schools online and send them an e-mail. Good luck!

I would also recommend to check Wallstreet Institute. They have several centers in France and always need native English speakers, whether they have experience or not. They also have some service department and sales positions for those who speak at least a little local language. As far as I know salaries are quite good, there is a lot of work and the atmosphere is fun.
Some people get part time jobs in different places at the same time, so they keep themselves busy and earn good money.
Normally all the job adds are at the website.
