Some people call this sight a natural world wonder. This is a big rocky hill standing on the island in Atlantic Ocean and connected to the land by sandy trails and a special bridge kind of way. When you drive from some cities and start to approach Mont-Saint-Michel is appears like an oasis in the ocean, almost unbelievable view-like a ghost castle.
Fortified from the side the hill accommodates a beautiful Gothic and Romanesque abbey on top. To reach it you will need to go up the narrow steep pebbled-stone streets. Buildings are small charming and full of souvenir shops, pricey cafes, restaurants and bars. In the evening find La Mere Poulard restaurant there. Although every guide book suspiciously recommends it, we have still followed the advice and didn't regret trying their specially made omelette. It is not a cheap restaurants (a dinner was about 100 € for two with moderate wine) but very charming. They also have a hotel (about 250€ per night).
Going up to the top (500 feet above sea-level) you might get tired but have a rest at numerous observation terraces which open a great view of the endless ocean. Pictures turn out great there!
It is really worth finishing the way because at the top you will find the mysterious Abbey and its architectural ensemble which corresponds to 13th century. It is full of history and beauty. Audio tours of the sight are available at the museum reception in many languages.
It is an incredible place! If you stay in France and have enough time, do not hesitate to visit it. It is 322 km from Paris, not so far from Rouen (one day trip both ways) and in proximity to Bretagne (city of Saint-Malo is the closest).
