Western Australia: Go Sandboarding

An excellent way to spend an afternoon in Western Australia is to go sandboarding. Excursions out to the sand dunes can be bought alone or combined with a trip to the pinnacles. They are reasonably priced and amazingly good fun, plus you won't help but make loads of friends after rolling around in the sand with them.

Put simply sandboarding is like snowboarding but on sand dunes. Sounds obvious, but a lot of people look blank when you mention you've done this. You basically are given a big wooden board which you sit on, feet flat on it, leaning slightly forward, with your hands gripping the front for dear life as you are pushed over the edge of an enormous sandy hill.

The sport apparently has some skill involved, with different weights and sizes of people making a difference to how you ride, but basically the thing is to try and go as far and as fast as you can down the slopes without landing in any bushes at the bottom. It's an exhilerating ride and doesn't matter if you fall off as there is always a soft landing. One tip though; the sand isn't pure white so make sure you're not wearing light-coloured clothes as they could end up with yellowish streaks on!

Another great part of a trip which may be included is dune-riding in buses. The sight of 4-wheel drives, mini buses and coaches driving over the sand dunes is surprising enough, but it is even more exciting when they deliberately find the steepest sand dune they can to career off of. It may not be as fast as some theme park rides, but plunging head first into a pile of sand is enough to make most people hold their breath.
