New South Wales: Bald Rock

For those of us lacking the time, money or energy to travel to Uluru, Bald Rock is its surprisingly unknown cousin. At 200 metres high it is smaller than Uluru, but still holds the title of largest granite rock in Australia. A trip to Bald Rock seems a lot easier too, as it is surrounded by flowers and trees rather than rocks and dust.

The park it sits in has helpfully signposted different routes up the rock, with different coloured spots to show the level of difficulty up that path. There are steep, scrambly bits as well as easier walking bits, but all trips to the top are rewarded with an incredible view.

Take a bottle of water and some food for a picnic, as at the top there are lots of flat spaces to sit and watch the world go by, the stillness interrupted only occasionally by the odd cheer as the next visitor reaches the peak, the highest point for miles around. The smooth grey surface of the rock is beautiful itself, with thin bands of red and white running through and showing its age. The walk back down is just as rewarding, as the air becomes warmer the less exposed you get, and the flora become more abundant.
