Porto Alegre: Back to the bright lights

After four nights taking it easy in Canela (well, as easy as it'sm possible to take it while camping in a tiny tent in alternating blistering heat and thundery downpours...) it was on to the bright lights of Porto Alegre - the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. Despite having been advised that this was one of the wealthiest, most developed cities in Brazil, I think I was still half expecting it to be a huge concentration of cowboys discussing breeding techniques and planning their next hoe down. I was utterly wrong - this is a modern, clean city which has made the most of its less than overwhelming physical charms. Based around a large lake at the meeting of three rivers, much fuss is made around the impressive sunset, and millions of trees have been planted in the city centre - providing vital shade in the stifling summer sun. There are museums and cultural centres at every turn, and much public money has been spent on delivering a good quality of life for the city's inhabitants.
