Venedig: Need to have a day that doesn’t blow your budget or break the bank?

I really wanted to get a good feel for Venice without getting overwhelmed by the shear volume of people and the cost of everything. This lead me to one of my favorite ways to spend time there; which was finding a good campo (small square) to sit in and read, or do nothing at all and just observe the people going by. I was not alone in this, I noticed that at one point in the afternoon a lot of the locals do this too, even if it was just to eat lunch. On really nice days there are areas where you can find droves of people lying around in the sun taking a siesta; the great thing is you don’t really look out of place if you participate.
The other plus side of this was that it seems that the city is full of street performers and most are pretty good; it wasn’t often long before a show would begin for a little mid-afternoon entertainment. It may seem a little silly but it was quite easy to spend the better part of an afternoon watching the performers and people.
That said, it made for a great day that didn't break the bank.
