If the Thai New Year celebrations don't strike the fear of God into you, they should. There is NO escape from one of the world's biggest water fights. Grannies get it, police officers get it, even monks get it during the festivities from April 13 to 15. Deaths have even been reported during the Songkran as motorcylists and tuk tuk drivers get blinded by cackling locals throwing buckets of the wet stuff. One poor party goer was found floating in Chiang Mai's moat after going a bit too far to fill her bucket. Saying that, Chiang Mai is possibly one of the best places to celebrate the Songkran since the inner citadel is surrounded by a moat - filled with gallons of water for your armory! Isuzu Dmaxs carrying entire families drive around the moat all day hooting with laughter as they catch farang unawares with freezing cold water from blocks of ice in barrels on the back. There are parties in the street and huge face offs with supersoakers outside Thai Pai gate. Just don't swallow the moat water! I ended up with my head in a bucket for three days. But it was well worth it. I'll be back to Chiang Mai for the grudge match!!
