Dunedin: The Heart Of A City

Sometimes cities just feel alive. They feel vibrant. They feel electric. They feel full of life. Sometimes, if you find a high point to look down from, the streets can resemble veins, the cars and the people blood.
Cities have a life force all of their own.
And it is usually fairly simple to find the heart of a city, where the life pulses with existential regularity.
You just follow the energy until you find it.
Dunedin is one of the most southerly cities in New Zealand, and lies under a cold grey sky. But its heart is the Octagon, the small oasis in the middle of the concrete sea.
The Octagon is one of the oldest parts of the city, and consists of a terraced open area, frequented by business people having their lunch and enjoying a quiet smoke. Students use it as a place to party on long drunken nights, and it has welcomed back troops from several wars, as well as witness protests, royal visits, and almost every important event in the city's history.
The Octagon is watched over by a large statue of Robert Burns, the Scottish poet who has become almost the patron saint of the city.
