Some tips:
If you buy ticket online and print it at home, you will save 20 dollars per person.
It is important that if you would like to try all the fun, you should definitely come as early as possible. Check the scheduling for different dates at the website (opening times and times of different events differ) http://www.sixflags.com/greatAdventure/
Take some extra clothes in case you want to have water-involved rides (there are a few and they are exciting).
Put the entire big uncomfortable luggage that you don't need and some valuables in the locker (available at the park).
DO NOT EAT about 1-2 hours before the thrill rides (big rollercoasters)! You will feel sick after the ride and won't be able to enjoy the rest of the fun. At the same time it is better to have breakfast in the morning, because hunger makes people weak and also sick after the rides.
There are many food options (restaurants, fast food counters, cafes...), so if you decide to have a lunch or a snack, wait some time after. Walk around; try some less thrilling entertainment, like signing in a special studio and making a record.
I had just a simple entrance ticket, so I had to stay in lines, sometimes it was about 30 minutes for the most popular ones (like Superman). I've seen some people having a special bracelet, which allowed them to have an advantage of ignoring the queuing. I think it is available at the entrance to the park for a special price.
If you don't want to pay and ready to wait, do not worry, we have still managed to try everything we wanted and sometimes even twice. This way I can say it is better to go on a weekday. At the evening there are less people, so you can have the second ride on some rollercoasters without long waiting.
Our favourites were Superman: Ultimate Flight (this is where you are turned head-forward, it gives the unforgettable feeling) and Nitro (the most explosive coaster on the planet, goes 230 feet in the air and dives 215 feet down at speeds approaching 80 mph, you are fixed only in the lower part of the body and feel like flying).
Rolling Thunder was too loud and uncomfortable: seats are old fashioned, made of wood and it really hurts.
