Sleeping bags and sheets- My hostels have sheets already. I have actually never been to a place where I needed my own. Really this is just weight on your back.
Valuables- All these things are likely to get stolen. My friend has had his cameras, laptop, among other things stolen from traveling. You can always use the internet cafes. This costs maybe one dollar per half hour, but at least you aren't lugging around that large laptop.
Travelers checks- This might seem like a good option, but really its just a huge hassle and a lot of additional fees. The best thing that I have found is to get a Bank of America credit card. They work with many banks around the world. When I usedcertain ATMs in other countries, then I don't have to fee a fee to take money out. Plus I get the best exchange rate of the day.
Lastly, don't bring anything you won't use more than once. All these extra things add up and take your space. Just bring clothes and money. I like to even bring one empty suitcase because I know I am going to probably buy a lot when I am there.
