Cebu: Traveling around the Island

If you’re traveling around the island of Cebu, you’ll find a variety of different transport options.

To get to most destinations from Cebu City you can catch a bus, either air conditioned or non air conditioned. Ordinary buses i.e. the non-aircon type are the cheapest way to travel long distances. But there is a downside! They pack too many people on the buses and if you’re unfortunate enough to have to stand for your entire journey, you’ll not find it a pleasant experience. If possible avoid traveling at the start and end of national holidays. Buses are at their worst then.

The air conditioned bus is a more comfortable way to travel albeit a little more expensive. It’s also quicker, stopping less frequently to pick up passengers. People don’t stand on these buses but during peak times you may find yourself sitting on a plastic stool in the centre of the aisle.

The major resorts, like Moalboal, are also served by the V-hire service. V-hire is actually an air conditioned minibus seating usually 14 people. They’re faster than the bus options and slightly more expensive. The downsides, there’s very little legroom. If you’ve got long legs, try to sit in the front seat next to the driver. And they don’t appear to run to a fixed timetable. They won’t leave the depot until they’re full. Luckily this doesn’t normally mean a long wait.

Once you get out of the city, you’re less likely to find taxis for short distance travel. In some areas the predominant mode of transport is by habal habal. These are actually motorcycle taxis and you’ll see several people [and shopping/luggage] on one motorcycle. Considering the standard of some roads in the provinces, they are the only feasible way of getting about. Always ask the cost in advance.

The other form of transport in the province is the multicab. Like a smaller version of the jeepney, multicabs link the smaller towns together. As with the majority of transport here, they pack too many people in, but as they only ply short distances, comfort isn’t really an issue.
