In terms of places I wanted to visit in Australia, the town of Port Douglas in Far North Queensland had long been at the top of my list. Somehow, I had developed this vision in my head of an isolated, exquisite, tropical paradise that just kept beckoning me to experience it. To give it its due, the town is certainly not unattractive. It is, however, so dull and boring that it will take less than a day to struggle to find something to see or do.
Attractions are extremely thin on the ground. Bird watchers and animal lovers will probably be interested in The Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the south of town. The Island Point Road lookout does provide a panoramic view of both the town and Four Mile Beach. The beach itself has a special penned area for swimmers, which keeps out the multitude of venomous marine stinger jellyfish that infest the waters. However, it is clear from both the lookout and from ground level that Port Douglas is hardly a lush paradise. And given that Australia is blessed with a coastline almost as long as the equator, you are almost certain to find beaches which are more attractive, safer, and much more accessible elsewhere.
Getting to Port Douglas is certainly easy enough. There are scheduled, reasonably priced minibus shuttle services which operate to the town from Cairns, about 70 kilometres to the south. If you really want to arrive in style, however, perhaps the real way to come to Port Douglas is by the mighty catamaran ferry service. Tickets can be purchased at the Reef Fleet Terminal at Cairns, and the journey takes about two hours. Disappointingly enough, this proved to be the highlight of my visit to Port Douglas
The fact that former US president Bill Clinton vacationed in Port Douglas is perhaps more of a testament to the resort he stayed in, rather than to the town itself. Arguably, it is the expensive resorts themselves that actually make the stay for most visitors to Port Douglas. Cheaper accommodation options certainly exist, but this does not change the fact that there really is little to do here. If your sole intention for coming to Port Douglas is to do absolutely nothing, then this is most certainly the place to be. If you are hoping to see or do something, however, you would be much better served by moving on to either the party atmosphere of Cairns, or the majesty of the Daintree Forest at Cape Tribulation instead.
