Kew Gardens: Kew Gardens

You could spend a day at Kew Gardens. At this time of year, the gates open at 9.30 in the morning and close at 6.00pm. You could take a picnic, or eat at one of their restaurants, and take your time to wander through the 300 acres of parkland, gardens, glasshouses and palaces.

Unfortunately we arrived 3.45pm, after walking from Richmond. Looking at the ticket prices – £12.25 per adult – it seemed to us that they were much more suited to the day visit I described above, rather than the two hours we had before closing time, but not knowing when we’d next be back in Kew, we decided to enter anyway.

Kew Gardens offers free walking tours during the day, but we’d arrived too late for those. For £3.50 per adult, you can also use the Kew Explorer shuttle, which stops at eight key sights around the gardens. However, having just paid for entry, we felt that walking was the way to go.

In our just-over-two hours, we managed to see Kew palace from the outside (there was an extra admission price for this), and the Queens Garden behind. This garden, originally planted in the 17th century, contained plants that were thought to cure ills and placards in Old English describing when they’d be used.

We also walked through several large glasshouses: mostly Victorian constructions, some with spiral stairs between the floors. The Waterlily house, as the name suggests had an indoor lake with water-lilies and the biggest floating ‘leaves’ I have ever seen.

We saw the pagoda and Japanese gateway, King William’s Temple and several statues by Henry Moore. And then, accepting that we wouldn’t see it all in the time we had, we lay on the grass in what might have been the last sunny day of England’s summer, and read.
