Laos: Take the slow boat

Westerners, especially Brits and Americans, are notorious all over the world for our fast pace of life and hurry to get things done. With this in mind, it is not surprising that so many tourists take the fast boat down the Mekong River every day, the trip from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang taking only a few hours, rather than the two days of precious time which the slow boat consumes.

The slow boat, as the name suggests, is the slowest way of getting from the border town to the old capital city. But slow is not necessarily boring, and with miles of meandering river routes, sheer mountains and dense forests to gaze at, the scenery is nothing less than spectacular.

Ok so you won’t get to wear crash helmets, sit single file, or be put on rock-watch on the slow boat, but you will be given time out from the world of computers, TV and 7/11s to sit back and adjust to another way of life.

Villages cluster on the banks of the Mekong, the families using the river for food, cleaning and transport. Children play on simple rafts they have built by hand, with the occasional visit to the boat’s window to offer fresh mango or pineapple, sliced beautifully and wrapped in plastic for the tens of tourists.

The overnight stop is like another world, with the collection of guesthouses and restaurants boasting electricity between six and ten o’clock each evening. A newly opened internet café showed the friendliness of the locals, as they came round with free bottles of Beer Lao for customers and freeloaders alike.

The slow boat is a highlight of many trips in Laos; uncomfortable, time-consuming and full of strangers, it is a fantastic way to make new friends, read a book in peace, or simply take in the view.
