St. Nikolai is a memorial for the victims of war and persecution between 1933-1945. The church was built from 1845-74 and planned by Sir Gilbert Scott. It was destroyed in 1943 during the bombings. The remains have been tastefully preserved and a few sculptures have been added. For 4 Euros, you can visit an exhibit underground and take a lift up the remaining tower for a view of Hamburg. I found the statue, The Ordeal, to be the most moving. Just the sight of the magestic doors leading to nowhere was quite incredible!
