Périgueux: a quiet capital

Perigueux is the capital of the Dordogne, a département that thrives on tourism, wine and foie gras.

So it may come as a surprise when, mid-August, most restaurants and bars start closing between 10 and 11pm. The town generally goes to bed early, as the nearest nightclubs are a drive away. At least one bar near the railway station is open late, although 80 per cent of the bar is filled with pool tables, so a night there isn't likely to get too wild.

A traditional kind of place, Perigueux also keeps it's prostitiutes and gay community well hidden and away from the town centre, although that's not to say that they aren't there.

Having said all that, don't think that Perigueux is a boring place; during summer there are plenty of festivals, shows and fairs running day and night. This August alone the town hosted the famous 'mimos' mime festival, the new orleans jazz festival, twice-weekly markets and night markets, an organic fair, jazz and rock concerts, the cyclotourism festival and petanque championships!
