Piazza San Marco The piazza San Marco is one of the most historic places in old Europe. The city is in such a friendly way strange, with all the waterways that substitute roads. Everything that is commonly transported by car is here transported by ship. You have people-boats, mail-boats, trash-boats, fridge-boats and boat-boats. And as there are no cars it means that Venice is a total pedestrian-area, smog-free, silent and calm. Well, not really. Loads of tourists make smog and noises, too, and the humans have to share their space with thousands and thousands of pigeons. And the Hood of the birds is the Piazza San Marco. They are everywhere and are fed, gazed on and just have a ball. You can buy food for them and support little micro-pigeon-businesses. And you can do what a lomographer must do: Get as close as you can! To reach the piazza is certainly not a problem, once you have taken a little ferry into the city there are signs all over the place. And where there is a sign, there will be San-Marco-Indication. He is the only yard that was granted the term piazza and is in the very centre of the City, from where the dodges ruled and the greatest festivals were held over the centuries. And even now it’s a magnet for festivals of all kind. I recommend to visit the spot during carnival. You can buy masks in many stores in the city and it’s said, that even the doves dress up for this occasion. [mehr]
