Beijing Olympics
Well I know a person who is working on the preparation for the Olympics, in fact he has been doing that for the past 2 or 3 years. And while I do have a problem with some of their practices I think it is a bit unfair to say they should not have gotten the opportunity to host the Olympics.
I know a woman who goes to China once a month as a guide and she has a lot of Chinese friends - one of the main things she keeps saying is how Chinese people are delighted with the fact their country will be showcased to the world. Its the government that is the problem, not the people. As far as security is concerned, it is always an issue with these types of events. I read an article recently in Vanity Fair about the Olympics in Greece and how most of the stadiums were almost not finished on time and they hired an American consultancy to help them with the security issues. They failed to show (I could not believe it either) and then a week before the event they just pulled all the police force from all over country to Athens. Somehow I don't think Chinese will leave it to the last minute. My dad travels to athletics veteran championships almost every year and the stories he told me - in Greece it was fantastic, in Puerto Rico they were ferried off with a school bus under police escort to the stadium and in Japan they were hungry because all they got for breakfast was a bowl of rice (rice is not the problem but give that to a hammer thrower who is almost 2 meters and some 100 kilos, well its too small of a portion for sure :) So its interesting to hear about the perspective of the athlete as well. I think when it comes to China, just because it is such a controversial topic, they will try to outshine everyone else. Is that a good thing or a bad thing, I think we'll know once the event is over. |

Most inaccessible/dangerous
I really have lead a sheltered life by comparison. Then again we did have war in these parts. Thank heavens that has settled down long time ago.
As far as I am concerned, I was in New York but I really did not think it was THAT bad, I think Americans we were with we more concern what we would get up to :) There was a bit of an incident but nothing worrisome just some drunk who didnt want to leave us alone. And apparently some parts of Budapest can be very dodgy, however as we walked around through most of them I can atest it was not that bad either. In fact we had quite a pleasant chat with some prostitutes :) |

Beautiful Places
I agree I would love to see Goa. New Delhi as well and possibly Pune as there is a wonderful Osho meditation retreat I heard wonderful things about.
A friend has a travel agency that does India tours up to 4 times a year, I am still debating is it better to go with friends and make your own arrangements or travel with a group (although I really do not like that). I know it is very affordable the only thing that is really expensive for me (as I am living in Europe) is the price of the plane ticket. |

Big Ben
I agree with James there are some other sights in London that are well worth exploring. But for the first time visitor, the Thames, the London bridge, the Houses of Parliament it is all exciting. Hell I even had fun at Madam Taussad.
I would definitely visit a few museums, pop down by few markets and visiting some of the wonderful parks. London is a place that is truly never boring, there is something to do even if the weather is shitty :) |

Santiago de Campostela
I actually read about it a while back and then it turned out a friend did it last year. Her brother lives in Spain and did it the year before that, so on a whim she decided if he can do it, she can do it too. She did the whole route and said it was an amazing experience.
As I like to do my research beforehand, I did some digging and well I think I have to build up my muscles if I plan to do the whole route. I mean you can do shorter routes too, but for something like this I would like to go the full hog :) |

Euro 2008 UEFA
I am fairly sure there will be plenty of places to watch the games even though it might be too late for the tickets.
I know when Croatia was doing well in the World cup, sale of plasma TV soared as every bar had to have at least one telly so the punters could watch and not miss a game :) And when we did really well there were even big screens out in the squares and it was quite an event. Austria is lovely and the train connections in my opinion are quite good, so you can get about without a problem. If you do plan to travel around, I would check how long in advance you have to book the train tickets. It is a case of better safe then sorry. I know plenty of people from Croatia who are planning to go by cars and trains even though they also dont have the tickets for the matches. |

London*London*London
Well, I did write extensively about the sights of London (and there are plenty) however I will just give you the gist what are in my experience things you shouldnt miss no matter how long or short your stay is...
Visit one market (my favorite Portabello or Camden) best time to experience is during the weekend... I absolutely loved both of them... food, people, shops unbeatable. Visit at least a few museums (my recommendations Tate, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum and National Gallery). Most museum do not charge for entrance nowadays so you really do not have any excuse. Its difficult to cram it all in if you are there for short period of time, but manage at least one. Visit one of the parks my favorite Primrose Hill :) Even Hyde Park is cool :) About accommodation, if you are staying with friends thats great cos it can be costly to stay in London... however if you are not, I would suggest Travelodge website. They have special offers from ł19 per night (thats per night not per person so you basically share the amount if you are traveling with anyone). If you are lucky and Travelodge has plenty of hotels in London (Marylebone, King's Cross, Battersea to name a few) you can sleep in the city center, in the hotel for ridiculously low amount of money... and since I have stayed in Travelodge on my last trip, its comfy, clean and you have your own bathroom which seems to be a luxury if you are looking for central London accommodation (like a hostel or b&b). Hope this helps :) |

Holiday in May to Croatia
I have to say I havent been there myself, however some friends went to Crna Gora for rafting last year and they loved it. The long bus trip put me off.
My parents did travel extensively through all of the states of former Yugoslavia before the war and I know Bar and Budva are top spots in the seaside part. At Budva riviera by far most popular was the St. Stephen's beach. As I said my friends did keep raving about it, the nature is supposed to be magnificent and from what I have gathered it is much more affordable then Croatia. And if you want a sneak preview before you go, I would suggest Casino Royale, it was filmed there :) |

Holiday in May to Croatia
Well there are plenty of islands such as Hvar, Korcula, Vis all beautiful and well worth the visit. The only problem is if you are going by car, it is a long drive and then the ferry it can take a while. The good thing is if you are going in May there definitely wont be too many tourists. Even Dubrovnik is a good option in May.
You can try Kornati (thats near Zadar) or even Krk which is closer to Istria, I was on Krk for New Years eve and it was great, given only 2 coffee shops in Malinska were working as it was out of season but we had long walks and it was really great. Anyhow if you need any more info send me a message, I'll do my best to help :) |

Short Trip to Belfast/Dublin
If you are strapped for time, I would suggest Dublin. I was in Belfast and we did go to see Giants Causeway (breathtakingly beautiful seriously) but it is a trek for 2.5 days...
In Dublin everything is right under your nose... if you like art I'd suggest National Gallery... if you like shopping, St. Stephen's green shopping center...and as for pubs, you will be spoiled for choice, but I'd suggest the Dame Tavern a little bit off Temple Bar (great mixture of locals and great live music)... oh and dont mix Guinness and tequila, not a good combo :) Whichever you choose have fun :) |

Blueberry Pub - Norwich
Hello,
I just wanted to thank you for your tips about Norwich. I am going there at the beginning of March so it was quite helpful to read about some of your suggestions rather then wander around trying to find a decent pub :) Cheers. Roberta |
