Pompeii
Hi Gulutz:
Driving in Rome is madness – and to enter or even park in Florence is not always easy either. Nevertheless I would recommend renting a car to do the drive between Rome and Florence, which is really quite nice. Florence stays at the very “entrance-steps” of the Tuscany Apennines Mountains, and when driving you will see many little charming villages, especially if going by secondary roads, instead of taking the highway. I remember in particular the beauty of country-side Tuscany – and stopping in little creeks with nice landscapes whenever I wanted, instead of being conditioned to trains' schedules. With a car you can make many little detours – it is my favorite way to know the land and the people. |

Mexico Beaches
I guess your question is one of general interest for other readers wanting to explore the diversity of Mexico’s beaches in any other time.
My personal experience in the Yucatan Peninsula is wonderful!! The waters and landscape are just magnificent!! I found Cancun with too many buildings, way too urban - and certainly prefer the more relaxed and enjoyable Playa del Carmen. Tulum is a must stop and Cozumel an island in paradise waters. As you go further south towards Chetumal – on the border of the state of Quintana Roo with Belize, you will find other amazing locations. On Baja California I recommend Bahia de los Angeles, in the Sea of Cortez – a lost desert-arid like place in a great warm aquatic scenario. The Pacific’s coast waters are wayyy much colder in Baja, compared to the Sea of Cortez. |

Beautiful Places
Oh – India!! So many beautiful places to see! Surely Jaipur and the Rajasthan Desert are on my top priorities.
I would like to visit the Taj Mahal and other examples of beautiful Mughal architecture, but also Hindu temples as the Khajuraho. Towards Orissa and its lake, visiting the Konark temple would be nice as well. Would like also to visit Goa, Daman, Nagar Haveli and Diu – see about the half a millennium old Portuguese presence in India. As I like banghra music, Punjab would be part of my trip as well. The Gulf of Bengal, Calcutta and the Ganges River – probably would make for the final of a wonderful trip. |

Air Travel
Hey hansonrc:
I guess it is still time to answer your question – given one always keeps traveling and you are still in Amsterdam. Thus I would highly suggest the system of “air hitchhiking” – that is getting a last minute flight at the very lowest prices. Specifically from Amsterdam to the USA I highly recommend Airtech. See http://www.airtech.com/. The system works if you have flexile traveling dates. Let us say in a window of 3-4 days you will surely fly at a cost of ~250 US dollars one way, any time of the year. Airtech is the best company I know – maybe others also do the air hitchhiking. So Airtech has deals with companies like Iceland Air, Air Tahiti and others that may offer you last minute tickets they can’t sell. It is harder to find a good deal in times as X-mas perhaps. I always got a flight from San Francisco to Europe, or from the USA East Coast to Europe. Also I got flights from Europe to the USA. Airtech also flies to Hawaii, etc. Departures from Europe are only from Amsterdam. When flying from the USA, you also don’t know (sometimes) until the last minute if you will land in Paris, London or Amsterdam. In any case the extra European flight you may need to reach your final destination still keeps the entire flight cheaper. Good luck! |

Big Ben
Dear Senny Chelsia:
As you can read in the other cosmotourists’ answers London has indeed much to offer – other than the impressive Big Ben. If you are traveling to Europe I would not make London, my first choice though. You say you would like to travel around the world. In Europe I would consider first cities like Venice, Prague, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam. The world then it is not just Europe. Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro are must visit cities. If you are looking for amazing monuments of nature then I would suggest the Grand Canyon and the White Sands Desert in the USA. I guess I could go on writing about London, England or riding camels in the Sahara Desert. One thing I must though recommend to you: a trip across an ocean! That is our world – plenty of salted blue water!! Hope you may see the Big Ben and travel around the world one day. Best wishes. |

Moving to London...
Hey Chaps:
If you are a young fellow and enjoy parties and social engaging I would look for something near Soho – no doubt London’s party centre. This is where things happen in the art and music scene. I would share an apt. or whatever if being too expensive. Or get a 2nd job – you live only once. You say you have a job in London and yet are looking for the great lifestyle. Jack London once wrote that cities are just traps for men who have to live in boxes. One could say that the entire world is there for you to explore at your age. Nowhere in London will you have sunny days as in some parts of Australia or the Caribbean, or… I would learn how to sail and go across the world – but if you really want to stay in London, I would look also for something near the Thames or open spaces like Hyde or Regent’s Park. A man should always be in touch with nature – even in the middle of a city. |

where to stay in paris
Hello Mariaa:
I recommend staying also closer to the Luxembourg Gardens area. Quartier Latin is surely my favorite part of Paris – and indeed you are not that far from the Eiffel Tower either. Plus the public transportation system is quite good, or a slow daily walk from Sorbonne, or the Pantheon to Eiffel Tower is also the best way to know the hearth of the city. In terms of security I had friends robbed when walking at night near the Seine River margins – try to avoid that perhaps if alone. In terms of hotels and bohemian night, you can find decent cheap hotels in Quartier Latin as well. You will be very close to Notre Dame, Louvre Museum, etc. |

Traveling on budget/ best sights
Hello Roshika:
Between London and Cambridge I went by train. Once in Cambridge you may want to visit also Oxford – not more than a couple of hours away by bus, the way I traveled around Cambridge “surroundings”. London stays at about the same distance to Oxford and Cambridge. In London I would visit Saint Paul’s cathedral, Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s huge tall statue, the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben, London’s Tower and the Tower Bridge. For the night I would rove around bars in Soho, near Piccadilly Circus. In Cambridge a visit to the old colleges is a must. I recommend in particular Kings’ College. Just lie down in the grass and enjoy the view – or take a punt ride in the river. |

Living in Paris
Hey Spark of the Moon:
If I would have to live in Paris I would surely pick up the Latin Quarter. This has nothing to do with the totally silly USA’s Latin-Hispanic labeling of things and people. Quartier Latin alludes perhaps to the Latin Culture grandiosity in its original European expressions. In fact here you will find the Sorbonne, one of the oldest European universities. Therefore students are in every café’s corner discussing all sort of intellectual matters. Quartier Latin is also famous for hosting future will-be writers – thus it may be a good idea to search for students dwelling in the area, share something to start with. The areas with narrow “human-scale” medieval streets, the excellent transport system (many underground connections), and the proximity to major monuments like the Pantheon or Notre Dame’s Cathedral – are among factors to consider to live there. The Luxembourg Gardens are around too – and in general you will be in one of the best bohemian areas of Paris. |

Best time to travel to Las Vegas?
I was in Las Vegas in March, April and June. In June it was already hot enough to be a good idea to avoid walking in the streets during the day. You must realize though that Las Vegas is all about night-life, thus the warm nights of June were the best. I had long casino and entertainment nights and after breakfast went to bed at around noon. You wake up around sunset – thus avoiding the heat!
In the spring time was much better to walk the strip and enjoy day life – like visiting the Hilton Star Trek experiment. I highly suggest getting out of Las Vegas and explore the surrounding desert areas. A blooming desert in the spring time is just fabulous. I suggest heading towards the Extraterrestrial Highway area – deep, lone Nevada Desert. February may be too soon for spring events – but it will be excellent to go across the desert during the day. |

Venice: John Cabot's abandoned house
It seems that after John Cabot the house had many other occupants - so nowadays not much remains of its historic meaning. I am not sure who lives there now. In the case of one the houses of Marco Polo - it transformed into a hostel now, above some pizzaria... :-) :-(

South/Central America
I never been in Peru, but already planned twice a voyage from Chile to Peru and Bolivia. In Peru certainly you can’t miss Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Arequipa, Nazca, Paracas – all those “must go” places.
I can recommend in detail though a voyage across Central America and Mexico - if you want to focus on the Mayas, Aztecs and Olmecs civilizations. These are amazing unique places in our planet. One month is a decent time to do a great trip – two months is excellent. I would certainly visit Tikal in Guatemala, then Copan in Honduras, Tulum and Chichen Itza in Mexico. If you start from Mexico City, Teotihuacan will stay forever in your memory. Later arriving to Villahermosa see the Olmecs giant heads – and not far away the magnificent Chol Maya city of Palenque. I kept a small travel blog about these civilizations/my voyage in cosmotourist – and keep posting individual travel tips now and then about it. Belize is also fun – enjoy your trip. |
