Personally I found Playa del Carmen less messy and over-sold for tourists - a cool place,
with equally great beaches, when compared to Cancun. There are great non crowded (in
September) bars along the streets near the beach line – great music and one does not
feel smashed by hotel...

The good thing about places with many tourists is that it makes it easy flights wise. In
that sense the Cancun Airport is quite a good one with many regular flights to the USA,
