When the brother of Francisco Pizarro, Hernando Pizarro, arrived to Pachacamac he stayed
at the palace of the Inca Governor Tauri Chumpi – by then one of the most impressive
buildings in the city. Rich in history, Tauri Chumpi’s palace ruins are located today

Hospital del Salvador is where you should go at once if having little time when in transit
in Santiago. You will need though a medical order showing you have no contra-indications
to take the vaccine (if you are allergic to eggs?!!). There are a few private clinics

If you need to take the yellow fever vaccination when in Santiago de Chile, there are only
a few places where this can be done. You don’t need it for Chile, but for some neighbor
countries, especially if going into the Amazonian jungle. In fact you need to take the

Located at about 40 Km southeast of Lima, or about 1 hour driving from the airport,

Surely one of the most scenic gardens in Madrid, Jardines del Campo del Moro look directly

Along the “never-ending” margins of the Amazon River, boats are the main (and many
times only) mean of transportation. The small populations that live quite far apart from
each other depend highly on the arrival of fast and slow boats. This is true both for

El Huequito Harbour in Iquitos is like some sort of mirror of the daily human life near
the jungle. Since it is an arrival and departure point for international passengers, there
is a Police Station, occupying a reduced small structure up in the stairs. From it comes

When talking about rainforest fish, piranhas come to our mind at once. You can fish and
eat them all over the Iquitos area – though they have too many fish bones. What really
impressed me was the Arapaima, one of the largest fresh water fish in the world. Taller
than a man, they can...

Iquitos has much to offer in what comes to try new exotic food and drinks. At Los Bidones
I drank chicha and cocona juice. There are many fermented chichas based on corn, but I had
a non-fermented one, called chicha morada, obtained from purple-black corn (maize). It
tastes to sweat...

Los Bidones is a nice restaurant and bar located very near to the central Iquitos’ Plaza

While waiting in Santa Rosa for the return voyage of the fast boat to Iquitos – I had a

organized tours one can go searching for jungle night life and hunt small alligators and
such. If you are alone...

A voyage across the Momon and Nanay Rivers, in the proximity of Iquitos is a definite must
do!! The vegetation is luxuriant and beautiful - and the Momon River is comparatively
narrow. This is where the movie Anaconda was filmed, and indeed where you can find an

The Yahua is a relatively numerous tribe inhabiting along the Peru-Colombian border and
Amazon River basin. Surely they want to sell their products, and I bought a blowgun, a bow

use traditionally....

There are a few native villages on the outskirts of Iquitos – up to the Boras Indians in
San Andres. I visited the Yahua (or Yagua) Indians and surely it was nice to see their
typical huts and learn how to shoot poison darts with a blowgun. I was very welcome –
and painted in the face...

Iquitos must be the western-world capital of motocars!! Everyone seems to have one! They

enjoy trying a speedy windy, “dusty” drive. From the airport takes about 15 minutes to

By the end of the rain season expect the main “streets” of Santa Rosa to be flooded!!
You will have to walk across the island on top of very narrow water-wood planks, or go
from area to area by motorized canoe. My departure from Peru at 4 am was an adventure -
