Actually sounds kinda nice. The price has always made me skip this one...
Hallo,
Hi John,
much to say, I'll try to keep it short.
Time: Summer, unless you have gills. Might be lucky in June, might be very unlucky in July, late August & September usually pretty good.
See (touristy): town hall, harbor tour( wouldn't recommend, expensive and a little dull), boat tour on canals (same), St.Michael's (a must-see, city's most important landmark, great view from spier), various museum (like the city museum, the art hall etc), shopping streets downtown (Mönckebergstr. and Jungfernstieg), Speicherstadt (cool to walk around, huge Art Deco brick warehouse city downtown).
Do (non-touristy, the way locals enjoy Hamburg): drink Alster (lager shandy) on the Elbe beach (take ferry from Landungsbrücken to Övelgönne, which is also a great substitue for an expensive harbor tour, and your subway day pass covers them, there's small shack where you can get drinks and pretzels, sit in the sand and watch the cargo ships go by; it's a must-do on a sunny late afternoon), drink more Alster on the Außenalster (the large downtown lake that gave the drink its name), walk across the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof (2nd biggest cemetery in the world, huge park with mausoleums, war memorials etc), go to a soccer match at St.Pauli (awful 2nd division club, but one of the largest fan communities in Germany, great atmosphere), have breakfast in the Portuguese district (Ditmar-Koel-Straße), go shopping in the little boutiques and second hand shops on Markstrasse, and on a summer night you have to go to Schanzenviertel (Schulterblatt street), the slightly punky, laid-back pub district, where locals hang out and beer comes in bottles.
Accommodation: tends to be expensive (as everything here), but as far as budget accomodation goes Schanzenstern Hostel has a good reputation and the YHI Landungsbrücken is right downtown with harbor view.
We did the whole Balkan thing last year and I can only recommend it. If you're driving from southern Germany DO NOT MISS Slovenia! We spend a week in Ljubljana and the mountains (mostly Bled) and it is as gorgeous as can be, and it's on the way to Croatia anyway. I didn't think Zagreb was worth much time, it's a nice enough city, but a bit dull. I really liked Split, it's a cool concept for a city (built within the walls of a gigantic Roman palace), and it's not too crowded with tourists. From there you can catch a ferry to Hvar, one of the larger islands. It's totally beautiful and there is actually a bit of nightlife, as this is a popular yachting destination. You can continue on to Dubrovnik, but personally it annoyed the shit out of me. Super-crowded and a bit like a very expensive Venetian Disney Land. I suppose if what you are looking for is fancy restaurants, tacky tourist stuff, and other Germans (mostly pensioners) on the beach, you'll enjoy it. Not my thing, and not worth the roughly 6hrs or so by bus from Split. If you don't mind the drive, go to Mostar instead, that is fantastic and not as artificial as Dubrovnik. Many hotels offer day trips from Dubrovnik.
Really nice tip. Good details. Thanks
You do look like you're having a lotta fun! Nice tip!
Nice one! I like that you include lots of helpful information, like parking options and family stuff. Keep going...
Juist, immer Juist!
It's very difficult to answer for the simple reason that London is a very non-homogenous city but more like a bunch of villages fused into a big city, each with its individual character. Generally London is pretty safe, there are no real no-go areas, but even some of the less desirable districts can be expensive. Personally I would say where you should go depends very much what you're looking for. I.e. if you're looking for somewhere with an interesting vibe and nightlife you could do much worse than Camden. If you're looking for a multi-cultural melting pot you could do worse than Brixton in the south or Aldgate/White Chaple in the east. If cheap is your highest priority you should expect at least a 40 minute commute to the city). Don't forget that very few people actually live in the center of London and the city itself is surrounded by a dozen satellite towns from which people commute into the city daily, such as Guildford, Luton, Bedford, and Crawley. If I could pick a place without worrying about money: Blackheath south of the river to the east, surrounded by parks and commons, sorta like a little village in the countryside, but you can hop on the train and be in the city in 20 minutes, but unfortunately it's crapping expensive!!
This is quite funny to read for me, because it pretty much reflects my first ever encounter with British sports. Even though I still don't know the rules I can only recommend going to a game, it is HILARIOUS and there's always some nice guy willing to explain the score... ;-)
Sounds great. Makes you feel welcomed by the community you're visiting. Wanna go to Cyprus now...
You´re so right, I love this place! Best burgers in town!

Sydney: Try the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel. It offers cheap, honest Australian pub food in huge portions and has live music most nights. There´s plenty of good Asian food places in the gay district around Taylor Square, you´ll have no difficulties finding cheap food there. Cool place to eat: Take the ferry to Manly and eat take-away on the beach front (you´ll find plenty of take-away on the Corso, the main street).
Good luck for Canberra though, you´ll be lucky to find anything that´s not expensive and pretentious...
